On Thursday, February 6, the first CyberClub meeting was held in Mr. Gibson’s room. In the meeting, the basics of the Linux command line were covered, as well as two exercises of varying difficulty. The solutions to the exercises are detailed below.
We started out by booting into Live USBs loaded with Ubuntu 18.04. A Command Line Introduction presentation was given, and everyone experienced using the command line. After this, we moved into the exercises. If you were not able to attend the meeting, I would suggest reviewing the presentation linked above and trying the exercises for yourself.
Exercise #1 Solution
cd /tmp # go to the tmp directory touch password.dat # not actually a necessary step nano password.dat # write something to the file, Ctrl+x to quit ls # list files cat password.dat # view what we wrote to the file
Keep in mind that anything that comes after a # symbol is a comment which is ignored by bash.
Exercise #2 Solution
cd /tmp # go to the tmp directory nano .password # write something to the file, Ctrl+x to quit ls -la # list all files (including hidden) in a list format cat .password # view what we wrote to the file
The bonus question tells us to get a md5sum of the file we made. The instructions for this are below.
man md5sum # displays the manual for the md5sum command md5sum .password # gets the md5sum
After these challenges, club members briefly revisited the OverTheWire puzzles. Hope to see you all next meeting!
